Frequently asked questions

How long does shipping from Italy to the USA take?

Typically 14–33 days by ocean, depending on the port pair. Genoa to New York usually takes 14–21 days and Genoa to Norfolk 15–22 days. Livorno to Houston is the longest run at 22–33 days. These ranges come from Airlift’s own shipment history (P10–P90, the middle 80% of shipments), not from carrier brochure estimates.

Which Italian ports handle exports to the USA?

Genoa and Livorno carry most of Airlift’s Italy–USA volume. Livorno is the natural gateway for the Carrara marble district; Genoa offers more carrier choice and the shortest run to the U.S. East Coast. Cargo arrives at New York, Norfolk and Houston.

Can I ship LCL from Italy, or only full containers?

Full containers (FCL) are the main service on this lane: 20′, 40′ and 40′ high-cube, plus flat-rack, open-top and A-frame setups for marble slabs and machinery. Stone is dense, so a 20′ is often the practical choice even when a 40′ would fit by volume. U.S. road weight limits, not the container, set how much you can load.

What documents do I need to ship from Italy to the US?

In Italy: a commercial invoice, a packing list and an export declaration filed with Italian Customs (Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli). In the U.S.: an Importer Security Filing (ISF) before the container is loaded, then a customs entry backed by a customs bond. Airlift coordinates the U.S. side through its licensed customs broker network.

How much customs duty will I pay on goods from Italy?

It depends on your product’s HTS code and on the U.S. trade measures in force on the day of entry, not on the freight. Estimate landed cost for your exact HTS code with the free tariff simulator before you book. For marble, ceramic tile and machinery, the right classification turns on the degree of finishing and on technical specifications, so confirm the subheading with a licensed broker before you ship.
