PRSJU is the code you will normally see for San Juan on carrier paperwork. Bookings and bills of lading print the port of loading and port of discharge as UN/LOCODEs, and carrier schedule and tracking feeds use them too. The first two letters, PR, are the ISO 3166-1 country code for Puerto Rico; the last three identify the place.
A UN/LOCODE names a place, not a berth. Where a port city has several container terminals, UNECE often gives the terminals their own codes alongside the city code, so a booking can legitimately show a code you didn’t expect. Take the code from the carrier booking, not the one that looks most like the port name.
For a US import, San Juan also has a CBP Schedule D code, 4909. That four-digit number identifies the customs port of entry and goes in the port field of CBP Form 7501. The two codes are unrelated and not interchangeable: PRSJU on the bill of lading, 4909 on the entry summary. Airlift coordinates entry filing through our licensed broker network.
The UN/LOCODE for San Juan, Puerto Rico is PRSJU, printed as PR SJU. The first two letters (PR) are the ISO country code and the last three identify the place. Source: UNECE UN/LOCODE Code List, edition 2024-2.
