Who we are

Airlift USA Inc. is a family-run freight forwarder and licensed NVOCC (FMC OTI license 016162), founded in 1999, with US offices in Los Angeles and New Jersey. The Airlift group has its own branches in Chennai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Gandhidham, Kolkata, New Delhi and Jodhpur.

On the India to USA lane, the Indian office handles factory pickup, container stuffing and Indian export clearance. Airlift USA files the ISF as the NVOCC, coordinates the US customs entry through our licensed customs-broker network, and arranges delivery from the US port to your door.

Why choose Airlift for India to USA shipping

Plenty of forwarders can book a container out of Nhava Sheva. What matters on this lane is who answers for your shipment at both ends, and what the quote actually covers.

Our own offices in India and the US

The Airlift group has fourteen branches across India, including Navi Mumbai (for Nhava Sheva), Gandhidham (for Mundra) and Chennai. Airlift USA has offices in Los Angeles and New Jersey. The Airlift India offices manage export clearance and Airlift USA coordinates the import entry with licensed customs brokers, so one company is accountable from pickup to delivery.

Among the lanes we book most

Mundra, Nhava Sheva and Chennai to New York, Los Angeles, Savannah and Houston are among the port pairs Airlift books most. We also serve Ennore and Tuticorin at origin, and Long Beach, Norfolk and Oakland in the US. Each port pair has its own page with a planning range, and the Sealanes pages show current sailings.

Our own house bill of lading

As an FMC-licensed NVOCC (license 016162, d/b/a Airlift Container Line), Airlift issues its own house bill of lading under an FMC tariff and NVOCC bond, and contracts directly with the carriers serving India–US. Your contract of carriage is with Airlift.

Cargo we know on this lane

Granite and stone slabs, artificial quartz, cast iron and electrical insulators are the primary commodities in our India to USA lane guide, followed by textiles, automotive components, machinery and household goods. For heavy slab crates and cast iron, state the weight of each packed unit up front. The commodity guides cover packing, HTS codes and AD/CVD (antidumping and countervailing duty) points for each.

FCL, LCL and air on one inquiry

Full containers (FCL) for slab, metal and machinery loads. Shared-container (LCL) consolidation for smaller shipments, which Airlift runs regularly on its supported lanes, India among them. Air freight from India for urgent or high-value cargo. Tell us which options you are weighing and the reply covers them.

Customs at both ends, with the right licenses

The Airlift India offices file the export shipping bill. Airlift files the ISF as the NVOCC before loading. The US entry is filed through our licensed customs-broker network under a power of attorney from you as importer of record; Airlift USA does not hold a US customs broker license. One team coordinates the documents, the duty estimate and any CBP exam with the broker.

A quote that says what it covers

The reply states the rate, the routing, what is included and how long the price is valid, and can be read line by line against origin pickup and handling, ocean freight, carrier surcharges, destination handling, inland delivery and documentation and customs-clearance service. A lower price that leaves out destination handling or delivery is not really lower.

What happens after you inquire

From your first message to a written quote:

  1. A person reads your request. The form below and email to contact@airliftusa.com both reach the Airlift USA sales team. We check the route, the cargo and the timing, and ask you if anything we need for a price is missing.
  2. One person owns it. Your inquiry is assigned to one member of the team, who handles the reply and, if you go ahead, the booking. You are not passed between departments to find out where things stand.
  3. You get a written quote. It states the rate, the routing, what is included and how long the price is valid. Check it against the six quote-scope lines (origin pickup and handling, ocean freight, carrier surcharges, destination handling, inland delivery and documentation and customs-clearance service) to compare two quotes like for like.

Exporting from India to the USA: checklist

What the exporter in India and the importer in the US need for an ocean or air shipment. The Airlift India offices file the shipping bill and Airlift files the ISF; the US entry is filed through our licensed customs-broker network. The rest belongs to the exporter or the importer.

India side: the exporter

  • Importer-Exporter Code (IEC). The 10-character code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on the basis of the firm's PAN. No export can be made without one unless a specific exemption applies.
  • Shipping bill. The export declaration, filed electronically on ICEGATE, Indian Customs' EDI gateway, with the commercial invoice and packing list. After assessment and any examination, customs grants the Let Export Order (LEO) that clears the goods for loading. The Airlift India offices file it for you.
  • Letter of Undertaking (LUT) for zero-rated exports. A GST-registered exporter who ships without paying IGST files an LUT in Form GST RFD-11 on the GST portal before exporting; it covers the financial year it is filed for. The alternative is to pay IGST at export and claim it back as a refund.
  • Commercial invoice and packing list. Values, descriptions, HS codes, weights and package counts should match the shipping bill in India and the entry in the US, and name the buyer and seller the ISF reports.
  • Certificate of origin, where relevant. Needed when your buyer, a letter of credit or the goods call for one. Ask your buyer before the goods ship, not after they arrive.
  • Packing and fumigation. Wood packaging (pallets, crates, dunnage, wooden A-frames for slabs) must meet ISPM 15: debarked, heat-treated or fumigated with an approved treatment, and stamped with the IPPC mark. A fumigation certificate for the cargo itself is needed only when the goods or the buyer require one.

US side: the importer

  • ISF (10+2). The Importer Security Filing must reach US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at least 24 hours before the container is loaded on the vessel in India. Airlift files it as the NVOCC. Air shipments do not need one.
  • Customs entry through a licensed customs broker. The entry is filed through our licensed customs-broker network under a power of attorney from you as importer of record. Airlift USA is an NVOCC and does not file entries itself; the importer of record stays responsible for the entry and the duty.
  • Customs bond. A formal entry needs a customs bond on file with CBP before the entry is made: a single-transaction bond for one shipment, or a continuous bond that covers a year of imports.
  • FDA and other agency requirements, where they apply. CBP needs no import license, but other agencies may. Food, drugs, cosmetics and medical devices fall under the FDA; imported food, for example, needs FDA prior notice before it arrives. Other goods can fall under agencies such as USDA, EPA or CPSC.
  • US duty. The duty depends on the HTS code and the Indian origin of the goods. Check what Indian goods pay now, and which exemptions apply, before you agree a price with your buyer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a freight forwarder for India to USA shipping?

Check four things. First, an FMC license and NVOCC bond, so the forwarder issues its own bill of lading. Second, its own staff at both ends of the lane rather than an agent at one end, so one company answers for pickup in India and release in the US. Third, who files the ISF and who files the US entry, and under whose license. Fourth, a written quote that lists what is included, so you can compare it with others. Airlift USA meets each of these, and the credentials section on this page links to the registers that show it.

Can Airlift collect cargo from my supplier in India?

Yes. The Airlift group has fourteen branches across India, including offices in Chennai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Gandhidham, Kolkata, New Delhi and Jodhpur. The Airlift India offices handle factory pickup, container stuffing and the export shipping bill. Airlift USA coordinates the ISF and the US import entry, with the entry filed through our licensed customs-broker network.

Which Indian ports and US ports does Airlift ship between?

The main origin ports are Mundra, Nhava Sheva, Ennore, Kolkata, Chennai, Pipavav, Kattupalli and Tuticorin. The main US gateways are New York, Norfolk, Savannah, Houston, Los Angeles, Charleston, Newark and Oakland. Mundra, Nhava Sheva and Ennore to New York, Norfolk, Savannah and Houston are among the lanes Airlift books most. Each port pair has its own page with planning ranges, and the Sealanes pages show current sailings.

Should I ship FCL or LCL from India to the USA?

Choose a full container (FCL) when your cargo fills most of one, or when it is heavy, fragile or high-value enough to justify its own box. Choose less-than-container-load (LCL) for smaller shipments that can share a container; Airlift consolidates LCL cargo regularly on its supported lanes, India among them. The lane guide and the LCL page show the volumes where each option usually wins. Not sure? Send the dimensions and the quote can cover both.

Who files the ISF and the US customs entry for a shipment from India?

Airlift files the Importer Security Filing (ISF) as the NVOCC before the container is loaded in India. The US customs entry is filed through our licensed customs-broker network under a power of attorney from you as importer of record; Airlift USA does not hold a US customs broker license. We coordinate the entry documents, the duty estimate and any CBP exam with the broker, and arrange delivery once the goods are released.

How long does shipping from India to the USA take?

It depends on the port pair and the service. The India to USA lane guide gives a planning range for each port pair, and the Sealanes route pages show the sailings currently offered with their advertised transit times. These are planning figures, not guarantees: the carrier, the routing (Suez or Cape), transshipment and port congestion all move them. For your ports and ready date, ask for the current options in your inquiry.

What does an Indian exporter need to ship goods to the USA?

In India: an Importer-Exporter Code (IEC), a commercial invoice and packing list, a shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) if you export without paying IGST, a certificate of origin where your buyer or the goods call for one, and ISPM 15-marked wood packaging. In the US: the ISF before the container is loaded, a customs entry filed through a licensed customs broker, a customs bond, and any FDA or other agency requirements for the goods. The export checklist on this page covers each item.

Do I need an IEC to export from India to the USA?

Yes, unless a specific exemption applies. The Importer-Exporter Code is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on the basis of the firm's PAN, and no export or import can be made without one. One IEC is issued per PAN, and it has lifetime validity.

What wood packaging rules apply to shipments from India to the USA?

Any wood packaging, such as pallets, crates, dunnage and wooden A-frames for stone slabs, must meet ISPM 15: made of debarked wood, heat-treated or fumigated with an approved treatment, and stamped with the IPPC mark. The US does not let shipments with non-compliant wood packaging enter. Plywood, pressboard, oriented strand board and plastic or metal pallets are not regulated as wood packaging.

What should I send for an India to USA freight quote?

Send the pickup location in India and the delivery location in the USA, with preferred ports if you have them; the commodity, package count, gross weight and packed dimensions, or the container size and count; the cargo-ready date and the date you need delivery; and the services you want included. For stone or metals, add the weight of each packed unit. For machinery, add the lifting points and any oversized dimensions. For textiles, add the carton dimensions and the delivery deadline.
