Shipping chokepoints: how many ships are getting through

This page counts the ships a day passing through the Suez and Panama canals, Bab el-Mandeb, Hormuz, Malacca and the other chokepoints over the last seven days, compares that with the usual level, and links to the authorities that publish warnings for each area.

Almost every ocean route runs through a handful of these narrow canals and straits. When one is disrupted, your cargo feels it as a longer voyage, a diversion or a surcharge.

What the numbers mean

The figures count traffic, not delay: a transit is one ship passing through the chokepoint.

Traffic well below the usual level normally means ships are taking another way, such as the long way around the Cape of Good Hope instead of the Suez Canal, which adds days, not hours. Traffic back above it normally means they are returning.

Airlift is an NVOCC (non-vessel-operating common carrier) and does not give security or routing advice. Warnings for each area come from the maritime authorities linked in the table: US MARAD maritime advisories, UKMTO warnings and advisories, IMB Piracy Reporting Centre.

Source: IMF PortWatch, satellite AIS estimates, updated weekly. Port calls and chokepoint transits are estimates derived from AIS signals, not carrier or terminal records. They show how busy a place has been, not berth time, dwell time or congestion. Latest data Sep 11, from the IMF PortWatch data and methodology pages.
